Ummm, Mr. Obama?

Posted by: Jen

You are awesome. All of this legislation for positive things is starting to blow my mind. Case in point: lifting the ban on stem cell research.

It's better than sex! And nachos! And having sex and then eating nachos in bed!

From CNN:

"As President Obama reversed the Bush administration's limits on embryonic stem-cell research, he said scientific decisions must be "based on facts, not ideology."
President Obama lifted a ban that limited federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

President Obama lifted a ban that limited federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

The president on Monday signaled a clear shift in tone from the Bush administration on a broad range of scientific issues.

Obama overturned an order signed by President Bush in 2001 that barred the National Institutes of Health from funding research on embryonic stem cells beyond using 60 cell lines that existed at that time."

Emphasis mine. OMG OMG OMG (not literally, obv, just as a figure of speech, because REALLY guys, I don't have a god and I'm cool with not having yours either. Anyway.), wait what? You mean the government should not be run and legislation should not be controlled by the vocal and annoying self-righteous minority? Especially when that obnoxious subset of the population wants to hinder scientific progress that would help people all over the world? Well, consider my socks knocked off. I never thought this day would come. Thanks President Obama, I am glad I voted for you. xoxo

Oh Hai, Look What Obama Is Up To Now!

Posted by Jen:

Oh all that is smart and awesome, check out out this press release from Planned Parenthood:

"President Obama began the process of overturning the Bush administration rule that limits the rights of patients to receive complete and accurate reproductive health information and services. You might already know the background of this situation, but here it is in case you don't. Just before leaving office, the Bush administration put in place a rule that limits the rights of patients to receive complete and accurate reproductive health information and services. The rule allows health care personnel and institutions everywhere to simply withhold information about health care services, including things like birth control and HIV testing and treatment. It also allows health care workers to deny any basic health care service based on their personal biases. "

Well, that was quick. I really have to say, I am impressed with President Obama's can do/will do attitude. I don't think I've ever seen a politician accomplish more so quickly. It really makes me happy (and incredibly relieved, after 8 years of horror. I think I have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome or something, as the next round of elections already strikes fear into my liberal heart.) to have a smart, educated competent leader for once.

ALSO, there is more you can do to help! There is 30 days before the rule is rescinded for the public to voice their opinion. Let yourself be heard via this great form provided by PP: http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/hhsorcp_ppol/ws3xxx3r1kketwd?source=hhsorcp_e1_ppol

Next, let's work on gay marriage!

Where I was last week ...

Posted by: Kim

WATCHING HISTORY HAPPEN.

I'm in there. Stripey hat with a pompom or three, because when I am cold I turn into a five-year-old. That tuft of pink fuzz in the immediate foreground may or may not be a part one of the hats in my party of friends, actually ...

I've found the experience more difficult to talk about than I anticipated. It's not that I was any more or less moved or ecstatic than I assumed I would be, but I also haven't really figured out how to put into words how happy I was just to have been there, despite the fact that I was really just watching it all go down on a giant tv surrounded by millions of people -- so really, I saw it happen basically the same way everyone did with a slightly (majorly) larger group. So each time someone has asked, "how WAS it?!" I've felt pretty generic in my gushing, "Amazing! Inspiring! Just ... something I'll never get to do again, that I'm so glad I decided to do..."

But it's true. The enormity and importance of the moment felt magnified. The woman standing behind me cried the entire time, all the while with a huge smile on her face. TWO, count 'em, of my male friends teared up during Aretha Franklin's staggering performance (I adored the hat, btw), and I found no time to cry because I was so busy jumping up and down in utter excitement with the French Canadian guy (shout out, Jen!) beside me who kept grabbing my arm and telling me how happy he was for America.

To be with so many people generating such a positive energy and standing in solidarity isn't something I can say I've ever really experienced before, and I think it indicates just how much the tides are about to turn for the better in our country that already the sense of unity among us is stronger than most people I know can remember it ever being.

My favorite part of Obama's speech:

"For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace."

Deep Lunchtime Thoughts Over My Sandwich...

Posted by: Jen

I have a few things to comment on, so I decided to put it all in one post for convenience's sake.

First off, filed under Things I Refuse To Believe No Matter How Many Times You Tell Me, I give you Eva Longoria:

Yeah, she's doing the Katie Holmes' baggy jeans roll thing that was thrust upon us last year. Eva, I am more likely to believe Katie than you on all things fashion (as you normally run around in 1980's prom inspired evening dresses, alternating with Uggs and Juicy Couture), but for real for real, I am not getting on this bandwagon no matter how often you insist on doing it. Fashion fail.

Next, I would just like to remind everyone again that I would like to be Victoria Beckham when I grow up:

Perfect, as usual (even with the matching red shoes). All signs of my sudden transformation point to this not happening as 1. there already is a VB, and 2. I am kind of sloppy. So, I will instead be satisfied if she joins our Dream Team of Friends and let's me borrow her shoes and accessories ('cause we all know I am not getting my hulking marathon-ized thighs into any of her clothes).

Last, I give you PRESIDENT Obama and Michelle's first dance at the Inaugural Ball, soundtrack by Beyonce:

Not gonna lie, this brings a tear to my eye... They look so happy! Michelle's pretty dress! THEY TWIRL! Beyonce gets choked up! I am quite happy that we finally have a leader that I can believe in. Good luck to President Obama!

Fame: Barack Has It

Posted by: Jen
Our dear President-Elect (SQUEEEEE! Let me tell you how thrilled I am to say that! I really cannot describe how happy the outcome of the election has made me, but let's just say I am finally, for the first time in my adult life, proud of my country, optimistic, etc etc, USA!!!1, whatever...) seems to have reached the level of global superstar, and is being tracked by the paparazzi. Continue to be a rockstar, Barack! Oh and please make excellent decisions, govern well, and bring good changes to the country as president. I love you, now don't fuck it up. xoxo, Jen

OBAMA FTW!

Posted by: Jen

Welp, tomorrow is the big day kiddies and we will be voting for Obama, in case you didn't know that by now! You all should too, dear readers, because this election is important, and I really think Obama is up for the job.

I am just really tired of people being closed minded, hateful bitches and would for once like to see the country elect a leader that is progressive. I am tired of the "us vs. them" mentality that so many on the right keep trying to play. I am tired of being called a fake American except when we are talking about 9/11. I am tired of people thinking its ok in 2008 to actively discriminate against someone for race, sexual orientation or gender. I am tired of people using religion for a reason to discriminate against others AND discriminating against people for following a certain religion (or not having one at all). I am tired of health care and the system being absolutely ridiculous (not to mention, "my health" being apparently unimportant). I am tired of seeing my tax money spent on stupid shit, like wars. I am tired of people refusing to believe that all people do not necessary come from an upper middle class white background and that not everyone has the same opportunities as others and then calling the less fortunate "lazy" for not making it. I am tired of being embarrassed of being an American, because you know what? People in other countries think we are absolute idiots over here, and from the past 8 years, I can't blame them. Let's prove them wrong tomorrow and elect a smart, competent, progressive leader for once.

Go Team Liberal Elitists!

I Appreciate This:

Posted by: Jen

Really, I have to thank Heidi and Spencer for this one, and I know I said I wouldn't post about Heidi anymore because her choices in clothing, hair and boyfriends disappoints me but these pictures make me want to have a hug-it-out style reconciliation with her like she did with LC.

Ladies and gentlemen, behold! The Best Picture I Have Seen All Week (no, really, even LOLCats can't top this):

YES! It is Heidi and Spencer with a gun and a six pack and matching McCain/Palin shirts! Flannel! Short denim shorts! Like, I know all of these things are supposed to outrage my east coast elitist liberal latte drinking self, but to tell you the truth, I love it. It is amazing, and I'm starting to wonder (a la my Lindsay Lohan legging line conspiracy theory), are Heidi and Spencer fooling the world with some kind of performance art about what is wrong with American culture and society and general?

Oh god, I love it. Seriously, I don't even care who they are really voting for (friends can have political differences!); I am a Heidi fan again... Look! Heidi is READING (she may be an elitist too!) a book titled "You Can Profit From A Monetary Crisis" while Spencer swills a Bud. If that isn't a "Chin up, America!" message, I don't know what is.

Thanks for making my day, you crazy kids. Oh, and LC, you still have yet to impress me AT all, not to mention in this kind of awesome way.

Dear John McCain, Ask Me How Much I Care About "Your Health"

Posted by: Jen

Now I know this is a few days late, but I've been busy and I'm extra cranky right now because I just ran 20 miles in preparation for my next marathon. So seriously J. Mac, that was the biggest asshole move of the century. Thanks for telling me you could give a shit about my health -- as if we already didn't know from your stellar healthcare plan -- but I'm really glad you could drive it home and say you don't care about women. Please remember you are REALLY old and fuck you. xoxo, Jen

ALSO!

Dear Sarah Palin, stop shitting all over anything that's not small town America and then coming to New York City and saying "9/11! The Terrorists! USA USA USA!" Seriously, I refuse for you to criticize me for having all of my teeth and knowing how to read for one minute and then trying to unite with me over our (non)mutual hatred of the (OMG!!!1) terrorists the next. It's disgusting, cloying and if we ever met, my thoughts on you would be much more direct and succinct, that's to be sure.

I'm totes an American, so stop saying I'm not to rally to your stupid base that probably doesn't even exist. I hate the fact that you have a Joe Six Pack and a Joe Plumber and assume that your average American is a dumbass white male redneck, and he should be proud of it. All citizens should be insulted because I don't believe that your average American is really like that -- they are much smarter than you give them credit for. Also, last time I checked I wasn't part of the state trying to succeed from the US. xoxo, Jen

PS: Dinosaurs and humans NEVER co-existed, and most "average" Americans can tell you that, dontchaknow.

Is our culture now just breeding us to possess an overbearing sense of entitlement?

Posted by: Kim

Eeee! Little Suri, arguably the most adorable child walking the earth at the moment, and a teeny little Hermes bag matching Mama Joey Potter's! DARLING! Right? Right?

Well, over at the fabulous jezebel.com, the internets are thinking otherwise, as the general consensus in the comments currently stands at something like, "OMFGWTEVER WHATTTT DOES A 2-YEAR-OLD NEED WITH HERMES WHEN THE ECONOMY IS TANKING?!!?!!!11!??? I CAN'T AFFORD TO EAT! (ahem ... at least not if I want to keep up with my Louboutin addiction)!"

I mean, I'm not gonna say I don't wish I could afford a little more luxury in my life, but my initial response to that is: "honestly speaking, what does anyone need with Hermes, then?" It's not exactly a new trend that kids with rich parents tote designer labels. I'm thinking what is new is the Gen X-and-Y-ers (myself included, as I am a whiny brat on many an occasion) who were all collectively raised to believe we could have whatever we wanted are running into brick walls all over the place because, while the majority were also raised with a 'Go Get 'Em, Tiger' mentality and are willing to tear it up in the workplace, most also think they should be doing so for nothing less than a quarter mil, and, well, the chips just haven't been falling that way since we all entered adulthood. Unfortunately, the majority response to this has not been to feed the fire and make everyone work harder or more creatively, or even throw their efforts in another direction, such as selling out with vigor or possibly marrying up.

In most cases, really, most people have just turned into whiners. And spectacular excuse-utilizers.

-"You don't understand, my parents were poor and I didn't get a trust fund but I should be able to act just like everyone who DID!"
-"I couldn't afford to get a college degree, so instead of working my way up I will use this as an excuse for failure!" (or, conversely: "I got this damn college degree and it's totally useless and now I am poor and screwed and DAMN THE MAN!")
-"I work really hard and it's still not enough, but instead of working more to achieve the things I want, I'm going to watch TV because I deserve a break."
-"I deserve it more than anyone, so I'm going to take and take and take and assume that's okay."
-"Of course I hate X, Y, and Z. They have everything I want and I see no way of achieving it for myself, so instead, I will hold a grudge!"

In truth, most people just want a lot from life. We all want to live in New York City (or whatever your personal equivalent is; generally speaking, they're never cheap), we all want to study abroad, we all want to go on exotic vacations, we all want to dress head-to-toe designer, and we all want to work less and play more. It's just that only a fraction of our generation is willing to work to get there, and make amendments along the way to our plans of ultimate consumerist-driven happiness when some things just stay forever out of reach.

The rest? The rest get angry when privileged babies have what they want - or rather, think they deserve. The rest use the state of the American economy as a rationale for their anger at the monetarily blessed, and yet another excuse. It's true, Suri didn't have to do much work to afford whatever's in her Hermes bag. But that's nothing new. All that's new is there are more people ready to reel at the sight and rant in a public forum, because of jealousy, not because of what's right or wrong, and regardless of the state of American economy.

If it makes anyone feel better about adorable little Suri, think about it this way: At least her parents are just rich and spoiling her with their own money. It could be worse. I heard a rumor some insurance firm execs just spent a whole lot of the nation's money to get facials and massages.

Nancy Pelosi Hurt Some People's Wittle Feelings...

Posted by: Jen

Ok ok, so I am watching the news right now, and apparently the vote for the bailout was good to go and then Nancy (my girl in Chanel) Pelosi made a speech. This speech contained facts. These facts offended some wittle Republicans who decided, that because their feelings were hurt by FACTS, that they would scrap the whole thing. Well played, asshats.

And then Wall Street responded in true petulant child form and let the market go dowwwwn. Now, I don't know a lot about investing, trading, or being rich, but I feel like the whole market is like, mind over matter and if you believe that it will be fine, and keep investing, then it probably will be?

I think I am kind of against the bailout anyway, because some people who basically ruined the market to begin with demanded a lot of money to fix it. Without oversights. Right away. Oh sure guys, that sounds toootally fine. Totally kosher.

Oh and speaking of Kosher (mmm, pickles), Congress went on Holiday for the next few days, so no more work to be done until the holidays are over. Great job guys, great job.

Jen Goes Public Service-y On You:

Posted by: Jen

Hey everyone, just a reminder, today is the LAST day to voice your disapproval over the new rule regarding "conscience" that has been passed by the Department of Health and Human Services. As I've mentioned before, this rule is total bullshit, and basically means that people who are hired to perform medical treatment, as well as dispense medication, can refuse to do any procedure/dispense any medication if it conflicts with their conscience without fear of repercussion. Obviously, this means that people will now be able to practice medicine at their whim instead of what is best for the patient. It's fucked up, and wrong obviously -- why does someone's personal beliefs trump the physical health of another? I kind of feel like if you are against prescribing certain forms of medications for certain reasons, or dispensing them, you should not be in that line of work. Just sayin'...

SO, if you beleive the Gov should stay out of your health business -- I mean, they're in everything else these days, do they have to be all up in your uterus too? -- please click on the link and send a letter: http://www.ppaction.org/campaig/frcp08_adv1?qp_source=frcp08pporg

Obama Is High Fashion; McCain Is Catalogue

Posted By: Jen

So I've had a few margaritas and I have major alergies and I can't stop sneezing and it's annoying. But ANYWAY. ANYWAY. Yo, republicans, can you stop being such hateful bitches (and I mean that in a completely non-sexist way since you people are all up on feminism all of the sudden)? I am anxiously awaiting McCain's speech right now, and I will try not to break my tv when he inevitably starts spewing vitriol all over the place (or did he just forget to take his pills?). I just look at that convention and it blows. my. mind. because I know no one who would ever yell "Drill baby, drill" or "USA" in an unironic way. Oh god, I'm scared. And looking into getting citizenship in the EU if he wins. Props to Obama for keeping it classy!

10:17pm: OH! He's on! And he has a nerdy voice! I know I am not supposed to do that because he was a POW, but I can't help it.

10:18: They are chanting USA again. I hope France isn't watching.

10:19: Shout out to the redneck with the sign! OH, OH 9/11! 9/11! TEH TERRORISTS ARE COMING TO GET US! The crowd goes wild.

10:20: USA USA USA? AGAIN? Fucking A. Shout out to Laura Bush. Ok, she's cool. Whatev.

10:21: Cindy! Your hair looks excellent! Cindy is his inspiration... Hmm, I thought she was a "cunt"? No? I didn't say it.

10:22: HIS MOM. Oh man she looks like she could cut a bitch. How old is she? Like one million? Oh, he just said she's 96. How old is McCain?

10:23: He will not let us down.

10:24: McCain respects Obama. Ok. Ok. Let's go with it, even though I think it's complete bullshit.

10:25: Do you know we are endowed by our creator with inalienable rights? He only means white men, I'm sure, but that sounds nice. Oh and he thinks he's gonna win. I'll see to that, Johnny, I will.

10:26: You wan't prosperity AND peace? Shit. J Mc mentions tough times (you know, that pesky economy?) and the crowd chants "USA! USA!" What, do they like recessions now? Are they proud of it? Well at least they can own it, which is far more than like, Russia ever did when people were waiting in line for bread.

10:27: McCain pleads for them to stop chanting. I think even he is embarassed for them. He tries to mention serious economical issues and the crowd yells "USA" again. Sigh. Asshats. He mentions Palin. Ohhhh man. Cheers. Her hair is back up into its crazyness, not that I am supposed to be talking about that. Because it does not matter. Unlike Hillary's pantsuits, apparently.

10:28: She did shit for Alaska, where like three people and a team of sled dogs live. Awesome. Why are people giving my boy Barry shit for not having experience?

10:29: SHE IS A MOTHER! IN CASE YOU DID NOT KNOW! PITBULL WITH LIPSTICK BITCHES!!!

10:30: McCain warns Washington about Palin and the change that is coming... Hasn't he been in Washington for like 100 years? Just sayin'.

10:31: Oh you will leave your problems for some other generation to fix dude. That's what babyboomers do! Get over yourself.

10:32: He just called himself a maverick. Is that allowed? Isn't that one of those things only other people can call you? My cat is drinking out of my water glass. Another issue.

10:33: Big spenders wasting my money? He John, let's talk about that thing known as the war. Pork and barrel? Oh, let's talk about those lucrative government military contracts.

10:34: HE HAS FOUGHT AGAINST UNION BOSSES. My father will not be pleased. The nerve of those people, wanting safe working conditions and fair pay! Also, his country cannot lose a war. Who are we, the Patriots?

10:35: Awww, he thanks the brave men and women overseas! You know, the ones he will not give a shit about once they return and need psychological counseling, education and employment.

10:36: What are you fighting for John? BILL AND SUE IN FARMINGTON HILLS, MICHIGAN! They lost their house! Also Frank and Toni in Pennsylvania. They have an autistic son. What do these people have to do with anything? Are they terrorist targets? I bet Frank and Toni have a hell of a time getting health care coverage for their son. Let's talk about that.

10:37: TEH TERRORISTS! AHHHHHHH!

10:38: Reform government? Ok, alright. I'm down. Oil? Dependence on? Ummm, let's ask one G.W. Bush about that. I hear he's best buddies with Saudi Arabia.

10:39: I HAVE GOD-GIVEN POTENTIAL and that "Latina daughter of the dock worker" is an American too! YAY! Let us pray! We are also a "culture of light", how meta.

10:40: Justices that are impartial? Let's talk about the last few appointed by our fair prez.

10:41: GOVERNMENT THAT DOESN'T MAKE CHOICES FOR YOU?! Heeeeee. He obviously means everywhere except my uterus. He calls Barry "my opponent". He who shall not be mentioned. Like the Candyman. Or that guy in Harry Potter.

10:42: Barry's also gonna make us all socialists, in case you were wondering. I think we should all have identical uniforms designed by Isaac Mizrahi, if that happens. And he's dissing state run healthcare. I think he's full of crap because my boyfriend (who is obviously infallible, ha) is from England and he says it's great.

10:43: He's gonna change the economy? Cool. He's going to "help workers that lost a job that won't come back, find a new one that won't go away!" So like that guy who works in the factory? He can get a job at Google no problem. At a decent wage.

10:44: Education! "The civil rights issue of this century". I am confused? Failing schools? I am kind of mad at him right now, because if your kid does shitty at school it is not the teacher's fault, really... More the parents who don't give a damn. Oh I think he's talking about vouchers. I need to read more about that, so I cannot pass judgment. I do however, think his tie sucks.

10:47: We're not sending money to countries that "don't like us very much" if he is elected. I worry that means "Africa, where they need help with AIDS". Ohhhh shit, he wants to drill offshore. How about we invest money into renewable energy before it's too late and save the polar bears while were at it?

10:48: Ok, he read my mind. He wants to research new forms of energy. Fine. Apparently Obama is a bad man for not wanting to drill and liking polar bears. To each his own.

10:50: NEW JOBS WILL BE CREATED! So that dude who lost his job in the factory? He can become a scientist and learn how to harness the wind and turn it into electricity. USA! USA!

10:51: IRAN!!! RUSSIA!!! Hahahahah, are we in 1980? Iran is crazy and Russia is part of the EU. Ignore Iran and Russia will work itsself out. Georgia needs our prayers though; those evil Russians! THE COLD WAR MIGHT COME BACK! Isn't this what the EU was formed for? Can't they deal? Well, it doesn't matter, because J Mc is NOT afraid.

10:52: His eyes kind of drift apart when he reads the teleprompter. Just saying. He mentions WWII. This will get the grandparent vote. He wants peace though. I'll believe him because most people don't want to fight (except Russia and Iran) and would rather eat ice cream and look at kittens, I'm sure.

10:54: He just seriously mentioned every issue in one sentence. He then mentions that new fangled "technology". LOL. I wonder if he can email? Or do you think he also thinks chat is like an email and writes it like this: "Dear Sarah, You look pretty tonight. Say something about Jesus. XOXO, John"?

10:55: I stopped listening. He mentioned scars. He was a POW people! Do not speak ill of him.

10:56: Bi-partisan, accountablity, transparency are all wonderful things. I don't know if he means it. He's very aw-shucks-y. I'd prob go to his house and eat cookies with him and play chess.

10:57: He was blessed for going to war. And because he was captured. It is kind of a scary story, like I do feel bad for him and it is horrible. Aw. Oh god, this hurts my cold heart. He couldn't feed himself. I'm an asshole. No, not really; that is a totally valid story, and he was brave and I respect it, but I still do not like his ideas. And I don't think being a POW makes you automatically qualified to be president.

11:01: He kind of reminds me of my dad when he tells a story. This is actually really interesting, and he's a good story teller. Still though, this is not relevant.

11:02: They just showed the ONLY black people in the audience.

11:03: Aw John, we can be friends. You just can't be president and history has NOT "anointed you to save this country in the hour of its need".

11:04: John, I will admit, you show a lot of class. Much more than your VP. He just told people to try to make a difference in their communities, I agree. Too bad your VP has a high likelihood of becoming prez. And she scares me.

11:05: Stop mentioning God.

11:06: Stand up and fight! I'm volunteering for Planned Parenthood; do your part kiddies. I don't think that's what he meant, but isn't that bi-partisanship at its finest?

Sooo... That was way moderate and I wouldn't be so frightened if he hadn't picked Palin as his VP. Her values are way out there and it makes me wonder what he's really thinking...

Huh. Wow.

Posted by: Kim

Countries That Don't Use The Metric System:

That'd be Liberia and Burma, for those of you who didn't recognize them right off the bat like I did. Ahem. Right, okay, fine, so maybe I wasn't sure on Liberia.

Anyway, wow, right? Jen's response?: Something along the lines of, "Thank god for track." I, on the other hand, am familiar with the metric system because I really like hockey players and they're like, never American, and because I played high school soccer and so a 5K never impresses me like it should because I know it isn't even the dread 3.3 (miles, of course) we had to do.

We should probably covert, in any case, because seriously. That looks dumb.
